WADEBRIDGE police are launching a new initiative to try and help the town’s young motorcyclists to be safer on the roads.

Following numerous reports of noise nuisance and speeding motorbikes through the town, police have decided to tackle the problem head on.

Tonight they will be holding a session at Steve’s Repair Garage in Trevanson Street, off Goldsworthy Way.

Neighbourhood PC Helen Lentern said: “The event is open to all local motorcyclists to help educate them about maintaining their bikes and being safe on the roads.

“We are asking them to bring their bikes down and let the mechanics have a look over them, to see that they are legal.

“We have had complaints of noise nuisance, so we can check and make sure the exhausts are up to standard. We have invited our traffic unit, and they will bring their motorbike for everyone to have a look at and chat about the dangers of speeding and pulling manoeuvres such as wheelies.”

Any motorcyclists that continue to use their vehicles in an antisocial manner will find themselves reprimanded. PC Lentern said: “We are serious about this issue, hence why we are trying to tackle the problems by talking to those involved first. However, if this is ignored and they continue to cause noise problems and break the law they will face penalties.

“The motorists could face fines of between Pounds 30 and Pounds 60, could get points on their licence and could be summoned to court. A number of motorists have already received Section 59 warnings; this means if they use vehicles in an antisocial manner in the following 12 months their vehicles can be seized.”

At tonight’s event there will also be representatives from a local motocross team to offer information about off-road events. PC Lantern added: “We are also organising a trip to the Cornwall School Scramble Club event on Sunday. It will be an opportunity for us to take the motorcyclists along and they can see other ways that they could be riding. Instead of racing along The Platt they could be taking part in organised events and hopefully find themselves an interesting hobby. We will provide free transport, they will just need money for food and drink
